Word of mouse – @stephenfry sells bucketloads of Tweetie

Posted on Monday, November 24th, 2008 at 11:10pm. #

Stephen Fry – yes, that Stephen Fry, is on Twitter. He follows me. There again, he follows another 19,000 people; I’m hardly special.

He sends a quick tweet: So many Twitter clients. Twitterfon for iPhone has improved immeasurably. Spaz Is good. Twinkle. Twitterrific. Love them all differently x

…then, around fifty people jumped in and recommended Tweetie. He does. And he sends another, which you can see above.

Now, Tweetie is a paid-for app on the iPhone, costing $2.99. That is not cheap for an iPhone app – many come for free – and there are a bewildering array of mostly free Twitter clients for the iPhone.

So, what do you reckon happened next?

j9son: @stephenfry – ooh ditto, downloaded Tweetie earlier – looks good so far!
hodgman: Now I am going to try Tweetie. Because it has @stephenfry ’s endorsement. And because I can’t get the others to function. (this is John Hodgman from The Daily Show and the Apple vs Mac ads)
MartinSFP: @stephenfry If they add the ability to reduce the font size Tweetie will be perfect!
ernmander: @stephenfry tweetie is great just popped my tweetie cherry tonight :)
oo00_Mr_K_00oo: @stephenfry Tweetie you say? Hmm must take a look
soctechnologist: @stephenfry heard Tweetie is the new best too… now I’ll have to give it a shot. Beats Twitterfon I guess? Cheers
patrickcentral: @stephenfry based on the # of people I know who just went to download Tweetie, you should collect a commission
davidhughes: @stephenfry Tweetie is my favourite too; looks like a native app. Alternate themes in the next version should you dislike the bubbles.
markbate: @stephenfry I used to use Twinkle, but found it missed tweets. might gie Tweetie a try. Thanks for doing the tweetsearch for me ;p
RevFry: Doh! Now thre’s tweetie and @stephenfry is endorsing it. How many damn twitter apps are we gonna buy before 1 does it all, well?
SuButcher: Wowee. Just trying out Tweetie for the iPhone. Best yet. (via @stephenfry) too right!
geraldinerowe: Just forked out £1.79 on @stephenfry’s recommendation & purchased Tweetie for the iPhone. Let’s see if it really is the best Twitter app!
MichaelSmith22: @stephenfry RE Tweetie. I’m in total agreement with you there Stephen. Super slick scrolling of tweets, looks good and intuitive to use.
soctechnologist: First tweet from tweetie. Very good indeed. Thnks @stephenfry I like the separations…
thegurrier: Just installed Tweetie for the iPhone. Goodbye Twitterific, I’ll miss the little blue birdie, but your iPhone app is slow and crashes a lot.
bertiedav: @stephenfry tweetie is great, it looks good and runs very smoothly :)
MiserableStoat: @stephenfry Just got Tweetie. Seems nice.
JetPlane: Ok, I’m a Tweetie convert too, thanks to all the excitement. It was a a leap to spend £s when there are lots of great apps for free
glenc: Tweetie has tons of features missing from other Twitter apps. Thanks, @stephenfry!
ruskin147: http://twitpic.com/ntqk – Watching spooks, trying tweetie(@stephenfry tip), using laptop, not concentrating

… the BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones ending just a small list of almost instant responses I’ve copied from the search.

As of now, just two hours after Stephen’s original tweet, there are over 150 comments about Tweetie. Many of them look to have bought the app for the first time, too.

If ever you doubt the phenomenon of “word of mouth” – or is it “word of mouse” – then @stephenfry’s proved it: once and for all.

(And, incidentally: yes, I did too.)

Yipee! Thanks for that James and Steve.

Checking out the search results you posted via the link above, pp13 of them looks like I was the first to tweet @stephenfry about Tweetie.

Do I get a prize?

Oh, okay then. ;-

M.

Nice blog by the way.

I think the “Stephen Fry is now following you on Twitter!” email was one of the most pleasant things I got in my inbox this year.

It might just be me, it usually is….but I really can’t see the point of these things. If I want to know what my friends are thinking, or doing, I’ll ask them…can’t think of anything worse than hearing from them constantly about stuff.

I agree with Stephen Fry (who is following me too) that this is the best Twitter app yet – discarded a few freebies for this one and haven’t looked back. It does absolutely everything you need to be able to do on the move and will be a bonus over Christmas while I’m away. Great blog with fab photos too – thanks James!

Hi James,
Thought I’d reply to Helen Blaby,

Think of Twitter as a rolling cocktail party or networking event, except instead of having to put up with those boring people who love the sound of their own voice, you just turn them off… so you get to choose your circle, and refine it day by day. You can also dip in and out, whenever you can, no-one minds.

Then when you need something you can just mention… by the way guys, I’m looking for… can you help?

And they always do.
Worth being one of those helpers, don’t you think?
