From where I stand, I can see no benefit from the digital switchover - quite the opposite in fact

1 It claimed more stations - yes -but many are simply
clones. Many are just advertising. Many are low standard and some are frankly offensive. I did not request the latter and they cannot be removed
2 I now need several remotes and my PVR and DVD recorder have become unreliable
3 I find it all more confusing

The digital migration is a huge opportunity for ILR's, Community Radio Stations and even Student Radio Stations, with a freeing up of the spectrum means there will be more opportunity for these stations to go on air, and these stations cost less to operate and have the desire to be different to the mainstream commercial stations / BBC so you will see an ever increasing diversity of radio content at a local level.

A national alternative to Radio 4 (Re: Adam) is possible if you can get national reach and get the listeners, because it has to be commercially viable, either that or radio stations should have the opportunity to bid for public money to run public service / public sphere programming.

Dear James
I live in a country where doesn't exists DAB. Fortunately. DAB will die in the moment that Internet will be portable (and almost free). ANd this will take 5 years? 10, maximum. So, DAB will be one more technology of transition. I can't understand why people is so interested in DAB.
«DAB is dead and nobody has courage to tell it?»

Here's a question: does digital/online offer any chance for commercial radio to be anything other than repetitive 'hits and memories'? Is there any hope we might one day see a non BBC alternative to Radio 4?

I'm personally not counting my chickens with digital switchover...there's so much politics at play with various radio groups it wouldn't surprise me if it got delayed further when the Tories come in.
