Hi All,
I am a Ubuntu Linux fan but total computer dummy! I could not get BBC Radio 4 despite having Adobe flash. BBC would not find my Adobe provision but my love of the BBC will not be defeated.
Eventually I downloaded Google Chrome from the soft wear centre and I use Chrome to open the BBC web site. It works. You could just try that. Helen in Canada.

Hi James

Many thanks for your comments.

With Radio 3 only 192kps is available. There is no lower bitrate. I tried again just now with my WinXP box and it too gave trouble. It works now, as does my hardy box! I guess the problem was not my end after all! I was wondering if the bitrate was significant. I must have had too much faith in Auntie. I'd not tried to listen to her in Ubuntu before.

All the Best for 2010.

I don't work at the BBC any more, but Radio 3's bitrate is 192kbps, rather than the rest which are 128kbps or lower. That ought to be the only difference; and I would think it's highly doubtful that the BBC would have changed something just for Radio 3's stream otherwise.

Hi

I'm a newbie using Hardy. The BBC iPlayer streams work for me... all except BBC Radio 3. The player is silent and eventually I get an insufficient bandwidth message. The BBC test gives me an all ok report. I suspect that the Radio 3 bit rate is non-standard and not compatible with the version 9 Flash Player that handles the other streams ok. It won't update to version 10 (in Firefox).

Has anyone got any answers?

Thanks

he he he.. well i did say it was god awful :-)

problem for me is that I actually use a Power PC Apple with Debian and hence the BBC linux iPlayer is not an option - unless someone's planning on cross compiling it ??? :-)

to be fair, i only listen to the radio anyway so mplayer handles it well enough but it would be nice to see an open source 'iPlayer' using Vorbis Ogg or something as opposed to Real (or just streaming Ogg for the player of your choice would be nice). Same applies to Spotify. "Use Wine" doesn't really cut the mustard for me.

hey, if you're just after bbc radio and want a simple wrapper script around mplayer then I knocked this god awful thign together in a few minutes the other night...

save as radio.sh and call it with ./radio.sh 1 (radio 1) .. ./radio.sh 6 (six music), you get the idea. There's fancy stuff out there but mplayer handles real player streams just fine :-)

#!/bin/bash

I still can't believe how easy it is to get new software by using the command line. Thanks so much for your tutorial.

I'm really looking forward to this week's release of Ubuntu.

A Stumble for your efforts :)

As a linux newbie I messed around with Firefox and could not get to listen to radio channels via iplayer. In a fit of desperation I installed opera, despite a warning about using a browser that does not support plugins it works.

I'm not in any way a hacker so I don't know how good this method is, but rather than installing yet another media player I've made files

VLC can use;I've uploaded the files; You can download them from http://www.tupple.net/radio/ I've done BBC1,2,3 and 4 and open any of them with vlc. It sometimes takes a few seconds to connect.

I have realplayer installed, but clicking on play button does nowt. I've also got the mplayer plugin installed... bit stuck.

Is it possible to just have the feed URLs to use in an external player??

I am using a Compaq Pressario and my tech friend thinks it is a hardware problem or TCP.

Any help would be most welcome. It is the feature l miss most since switching from windows to linux.

Helix player doesn't work sadly, I don't think it's licensed to play Real audio, even though Realplayer is based on Helix. Personally I installed one of the nightly builds from here:

http://forms.helixcommunity.org/helix/builds/?category=realplay-current

It seems stable enough to me, I've been using it for a while and have had no problems with stability. Sadly although installation is easy, there isn't an easy way to uninstall it.

I guess you could use the open source Helix player as well? https://helixcommunity.org/

(at least I assume this is different from the one you're talking about - I must confess to having found the free Helix *server* rather useful in the past..)

The dapper-commercial repository is for an old version of Ubuntu. You can either use feisty-commercial or wait for RealPlayer to be added to gutsy-commercial (now called gutsy-partner, in fact). There are other alternatives, including getting the Linux installer from real.com, which is easy enough.

Another way (without Real Player) is to install SqueezeCenter from www.slimdevices.com and then install AlienBBC. Should work on various Linux distros, Windows, FreeBSD... I've got it running on FreeNAS.

If you don't want to buy a Squeezebox hardware player, either use the Java SoftSqueeze or I'm using SqueezeSlave plus the 'Moose' windows front end.

It does rather more than just allow you to listen to the BBC. It will manage your whole music library and integrate with iTunes if you really want.
