James, I have learnt that in the UK, they are evolving into DAB+ from DAB while most of European countries are using DAB+. Now, HK kicks off with DAB+. What are the major differences? Thanks!

DAB is definitely getting more and more prevalent in the UK, my Fathers new car even has an in-built DAB receiver, which is excellent.
Radio stations like Absolute are also really pushing DAB broadcasting.

tks for the post, and I do hope DAB or DAB+ will take off in Hong Kong. Not only the sound quality will improve, it will force the Hong Kong Govt to open up the radio market.

When James says: "To effectively cover Hong Kong, you need seven FM transmitter sites", I remember installing RDS encoders for RTHK many years ago at the Mount Gough Tx site and how the signals would be rebroadcast from several low power Txs in the New Territories. RDS-AF being a key feature they wanted implemented.

But in the end a coalition between broadcaster/Tx operator AND radio product manufactiureres is key to market penetration. As James says a small market like HK has some chance of synchronising these parties - seems bigger areas, like Europe, cannot get the act together...!

Thank you for this insightful post. Meanwhile, you may have heard that DAB, already on such wobbly legs in the past, now clearly has no future here in Canada as the radio-spectrum associated to DAB will get reallocated. Sad but true. Cf. http://ur1.ca/l446
