G'day James. Just had a read of your post and I think you may need to plan another trip to OZ as in the last few years the micro brewing scene has exploded and there are about 150 brewpubs / micro breweries now dotted around the country. If you ever get back to Melbourne head to Beer Deluxe in Federation Square. In Sydney head to Harts Pub in the Rocks or The Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst.

I agree, there are some lovely beers in Australia, I was suprised myself at that fact. However to say there is greater choice than in the UK is a rather large over statement, I sitll think British beer (in particular real ale) is superior to pretty much anything on offer down under. Go to any good pub in Britain and you will readily find; IPA, pale ale, porter, mild, stout, golden ale, smooth flow, cider etc... Not to mention the fantastic season beers i.e. Winter warmer, Summer ale etc... Which Australia really lacks. Not to belittle your opinion, just that after living there for a few years I don't think Australia has more choice, far from it.

Thanks for the info. There are lots of good Australian craft beers to choose from. Here in the States, most people only know Foster's which is nothing like many of the good bears you mention here.

Glad to see you appreciated the likes of Mountain Goat -- some seriously good beers available from the new microbreweries, especially in Victoria. Equally glad to hear you slagging off VB, Carlton 'Draught', etc ... the majority of beers that come from the great Aussie beer duopoly (Carlton United and Lion Nathan) are pretty average.

Incidentally, it's no trick of chance that you didn't see anyone drinking Fosters down here; we simply don't drink it, it's almost purely an export beer ... it's always available at bottleshops, but it's just not popular with Australian beer drinkers.
