A useful fact

The new RAJAR figures came out a few weeks ago. (RAJAR is the radio research in the UK; similar to Arbitron in the US).
There’s a lot of doom and gloom in the radio market right now. Google’s pull-out from radio ad sales would appear to confirm it’s not a well medium. And tech-nerks like me will insist on claiming “You’re not doing it right” at any given opportunity.
So it’s worth remembering one fact.
The total number of people listening to radio every week (45.5m) is the second highest figure since 2000.
A lot’s happened since 2000. Last.fm; YouTube; the iPod. Broadband internet. Napster, Facebook, Twitter. Proper multichannel television.
We shouldn’t be complacent (young people are listening to much less radio, for example), but the fact still remains that even after a massively technologically turbulent decade, the total number of people listening to radio every week is the second highest figure since 2000.
