Beautiful radio things

SourceMac
Want live radio on your iPhone? This little beauty (and free, too) lets you do it – copes with everything except Real Audio. Nice. The new BBC Radio 96k Windows Media feeds sound fantastic / unacceptably poor (depending on your newsgroup of choice)

Worldspace no longer uplinking from London [Kim Andrew Elliott]
Shame – many nice people at Worldspace, and I got Virgin Radio onto Worldspace a good three or four years ago…

Commercial radio needs to fix its own problems, not moan about Radio 1 [guardian.co.uk]
I entirely agree (and indeed would have agreed if I was still working for commercial radio, being honest). A good, incisive piece, even if the man who wrote it still owes me a fiver.

Radio At The Edge [adambowie.com]
A rather better writeup than mine, from Adam

Can local radio succeed online? [Adam Westbrook]
A good bright piece by a journalist at Viking FM – saying that if your website has good stuff on it, and you broadcast it, then people will come.

Radio Slovenija
They celebrated their 80th birthday recently, and on 28th October, you'd have heard my voice on this radio station, dubbed into Slovenian, talking about what the BBC is doing.

Splendid website things

The Charlian, the world’s leading liberal voice – as long as that voice is Charlie Brooker [charlian.co.uk]
A bit of the output of what must have been a rather splendid hackday at The Guardian – an entire website devoted to articles by, and about, Charlie Brooker. Excellent.

Web things

Develop a Social Media Website With These 10 Code Techniques [Insanarchy]
Drawn in by the fact that this page uses a photo I took (bizarrely to illustrate private messaging, which isn't what the photo is all about). Anyway, it's actually quite a good, well-written article – indeed, worthwhile anyone working for radio websites taking a quick read.

What worked on the BBC Election Night special online [BBC NEWS | The Editors]
What worked, mind, not what didn't work. But all useful to discover what we should be putting on our sites. (Clue: video plus text.)

iGoogle apps I’ve written entirely in JavaScript

BBC News gadget for iGoogle
I wrote this, and hopefully some people might find it quite useful. Small, dinky, and does the job.

BBC Weather gadget for iGoogle
…and here's its rather more used partner, the BBC Weather gadget (over 3,000 users!)

How I do these posts

Add-on for Firefox [Delicious]
I keep forgetting where this is, and it's really hard to find on the del.icio.us site (look at me using the old-skool URL).

Nice photographs

Innsbruck, Austria [TravelMuse]
What a beautiful photograph heading up this article about Innsbruck… (grin)

Beer Could Help Prevent Cancer, Extend Life, Fight Disease [Gizmodo UK]
"Please spend your entire country's research budget finalising the process immediately" – sage advice
