A trawl around the web, December 18th to January 18th

(Above – Sunday breakfast, with the radio on and the coffee brewing. Mmm. Occasional readers may note that my radio looks like a telly, and more regular readers may not be surprised.)
Work has somehow descended into madness at the moment, and I find myself chasing my tail rather a lot. This has coincided with BT deciding that it wanted to unplug my phone line and give me someone else’s for a bit – nice of them, but that other subscriber didn’t have ADSL – and then unplug me entirely. Anyway, I’ve been therefore rather off the web for a bit, which has made my “inbox zero” pledge rather fail miserably so far.
Yesterday, I was at a good NMK event about the future of radio. Any conference like this that actually happens in a pub must be good (London Pride downstairs, but only Guinness upstairs. Not that there’s anything wrong with Guinness). It was good meeting so many interesting people there after the event proper.
Another thing I didn’t comment on was MCPS/PRS’s amazing outbreak of common sense. Kevin Coy takes up the story better than I ever could: but it seems the new-style ‘PRS for music’ is being rather more sensible with their online music licences. Hurray for them. Now, hopefully PPL will follow.
Other websites I’d heartily recommend are…
CrunchBang Linux – A Lightweight OpenBox Linux Distro
I’m using this on the Acer Aspire. Based on Ubuntu, but with the swizzy things removed, so it's nice and fast and does a really excellent job. Highly recommended.
Online Diplomacy: the Famous Fedex Twitter/Email Exchange …
Twitter user @thibet says: "Perfect example of why it's important to think before posting on Twitter or elsewhere on the Net."
Will we be able to use our iPhones as 3G laptop modems?
Jemima uses my photo to illustrate this piece. Yay, fame fortune etc.
Prepay or Travelcard
From the site's blurb: "If you commute in London, travelcards save you money, right? But can you save money by not buying a travelcard, and going Oyster Prepay only? If you only commute by tube, you might be surprised."
Abandoned London [flickr]
A great and unique set of photographs, showing shots of the busiest places in London… with no people there. Taken early in the morning on Christmas Day.
Android netbooks on their way, likely by 2010 [VentureBeat]
Wow, who knew: Android works on little laptops. Photos and stuff of it working in this article.
Paul Ross canvas print [amazon.co.uk]
The ludicrousness of this canvas print is already madness, but the reviews of this product are just excellent!
