Brilliant write-up, James.

The last time (actually, the only time) I was there it was 1978, when my first wife and I visited a Swiss couple we'd met while holidaying in Greece the year before.

What I recall the most was the cleanliness of the city's streets, the meticulous tidiness of their sumptuous apartment, their acceptance of laws which expected citizens (especially taxi drivers, apparently) to effectively spy on each other and report ANYTHING unusual to the authorities (in a country where financial privacy is seemingly paramount - or, at least, it was back then) and his army-issue handgun, which he kept in a box in the apartment, ready to be put to use whenever he did his couple of months' compulsory service (officer rank) every few years.

It struck me as a beautiful but unemotional place that I've never felt the urge to revisit.

That beer was too cheap for Iceland. Add another couple of quid on and you'll be closer.

Actually, according to the Metro the other day, the average pint in London costs £4.06 (dunno where they're drinking, but it's not the same place I am).
