How successful is DAB Digital Radio?

I’ve been working this weekend on a presentation I’m giving in a few weeks’ time. (My speaking calendar is on my website).

I’ve stumbled into an interesting statistic.

DAB Digital Radio really launched for Christmas, 2002, when the Pure Evoke, the first really consumer product, went on sale.

The Apple iPod was launched in April 2001, with a Mac-only product. The Windows-compatible iPod was launched in July 2002.

So it’s interesting that 4 million iPods had been sold in the UK by mid-2006. Which makes the iPod - iconic and tremendously popular device as it is - about as popular as DAB Digital Radio.

So it’s interesting that only 2 million iPods had been sold in the UK by mid-2006. Which makes the iPod - iconic and tremendously popular device as it is - less popular than DAB Digital Radio.

Or, to put it another way…

DAB Digital Radio. As More popular as the iPod.

Crikey.

That is a surprisingly impressive statistic. I can only assume that because there is no single supplier/single product DAB radio that it doesn’t share the same kind of awareness?

Yikes - proof that stats can throw up surprises. Whether it’s good for DAB or bad for the iPod is where the question now lies.

@Christopher: of course, it would be a lot better for both of them if you could buy an Ipod with a built in DAB radio…

Interesting statistic - likely hasn’t been discussed because DAB radio is an extension of an existing product category while iPod was the first break out product from an entirely new category. And people like to talk about the break outs.

It would also be interesting to compare the DAB numbers to the US HD radio numbers. DAB has a lot cleaner marketing story – it’s a clean break from AM/FM with a strong technology roadmap.

What’s a pity is that while Canada spent a lot researching DAB – and continues to have programs looking at enhancing mobility and multimedia – the industry looks to be going HD.

iPod has sold 110 million worldwide. I reckon my next DAB will be a Roberts Robi. I never understood the fear of iPod from radio people, they are two different things.
