World of Warcraft Zzzzzz

Posted on Saturday, December 23rd, 2006 at 5:44pm. #

One of my small rules for trying to understand what’s going on is to try things that people talk about, even though I might not naturally be really into them.

World of Warcraft is regularly talked about by Victoria Belmont from Buzz Out Loud, and is now being advertised on TV here in the UK - promising either a new low price for purchasing the software, or download the software free and try it for ten days online. So, I thought - why ever not?

So I did. So far, I’ve downloaded a 1.3 meg installer, which has then downloaded a whopping 2.5Gig real installer program (and insisted I change my firewall configuration). The download took around 18 hours. Then, I managed to tell the installer to, um, get installing - whereupon it did (and that took over 40 minutes).

Then I managed to see an impressive movie-opening sequence. And I got to log in. And then… it’s now downloading another 697 meg (as you can see from above). I might get this thing downloaded and working by the end of my ten day period!

I suspect you need to be a really dedicated player to want to play this thing: and I can’t believe that a 697 meg patch has to be downloaded within 24 hours of downloading the full game. That just looks like shoddy coding to me. But then, what do I know?

Any clues on what I should name my character?
